Site 6
Decided to try a new park we’ve heard good things about. I’m usually partial to State Parks because the sites are typically more spread out and feel like you’re camping in nature and less like a concrete parking lot – but this place did not disappoint. It was the best of both worlds – beautiful lake and tall pine trees, but very nicely manicured with “glamping” amenities.

deer everywhere!
Our site was right on the water. We lucked out on a cancellation the day I called for a reservation.
We rolled in Friday night after a super late start due to the DMV nightmare trying to get Kevin’s brother his driver’s license (but that’s another story). Paul (the guy who runs the place) guided Kevin into his spot in the dark, and it worked like magic! Kevin said he could have done it with his eyes shut with that guy’s help. Ashley met us there (she’s only 25 minutes from here), and we picked up a pizza from a local place called Topps (very good!) and devoured it like we hadn’t eaten in weeks (it was 9:00 after all . . . way past our dinner time).
This park has all kinds of amenities that we’re not accustomed to: food trucks, golf carts, super nice “bath house”, bait & tackle shop, covered fishing pier ($4/day/person), reception hall and some really cute cabins for rent if you didn’t have an RV.

The highlight of the trip (if you ask Nolan and Cameron) was the golf cart we rented for 2 days ($60/day). Their height came in handy, disguising them as 16 year olds, so we let them drive. Although our rule was an adult had to be with them. So, Kevin, Ashley and I (and Chewy of course) took turns around and around and around the “nature loop”. This is an asphalt circle around the 200 acre park with a speed limit of 20, so we put the peddle to the metal and clocked ourselves on the iphone until we ran out batteries and had to exchange it for a new one. I think the kids came up with extra things to throw away just to have an excuse to get some extra drive time to the dumpster to dispose of the trash. And of course we had to be “equal” on who drove for how long and how far . . . that was a beating listening to them work through that, but I’m glad they enjoyed it.

Hold on for dear life!
The cool part about all of the golf cart trips was the amount of wild life we saw – deer (tons of them!), an armadillo, squirrels, swans and a possum. From sun up to sundown and all times in between.

Chewy got to enjoy a swim!

There was a middle school/high school bass fishing tournament hosted at the park on Saturday. Prizes were given for largest bass (6.7 lbs won) and combined weight (5 fish max – 17.1 lbs won!). They were all decked out in their uniforms, fancy trailer to haul the equipment plus free pizza and drinks. Kids were there from school districts all over Texas. I had no idea this was a thing?!? So cool! One thing we did notice in this huge gathering of students and parents, not one mask was worn . . . It’s like we were in a different world – everyone wears masks where we live during this pandemic.

Middle/High School fishing tournament trailer – so fancy!

Other fun times included magnet fishing from dock, Halloween wreath making with Ashley, board games galore and of course more golf cart rides. Chewy also enjoyed a visit to Ashley’s were he got to play with his friends.
