Place: Mineral Wells State Park Site 44 – Loved it!
Who we camped with: Just Kevin and I!

We started the trip with the mandatory stop at Buckeye’s (yes, we made it whole 30 minutes and stopped at the one near Keller) Took a leisurely stroll around the whole store, sampling every fudge flavor, with all of the time in the world, no schedules to adhere to or kids to worry about – Bliss!
This was the second time we’ve been to this park, but the difference this time was (as mentioned above) We came alone! That’s right . . .no kids & no dog! This park has a unique spill way that you drive over to get the campsites always freaks us out. It looks like at any minute, the concrete could split or the water will come gushing over, washing us far, far away!
We absolutely LOVED our site. Huge rocks for climbing (not that we did), tons of trees for shade, and it felt so private.
There were deer EVERYWHERE from the moment we pulled in. One was right outside the bathroom, might as well have been someone’s pet. Another was right outside the back of the camper and we could see him out the window. Also there was a beautiful red bird that hung out at our site (a cardinal maybe?) I’m definitely not a bird identifying specialist or an “ornithologist” – one who studies birds – I just looked that one up 🙂

We had lunch a local Mexican restaurant called Taqueria La Estrella – definitely authentic Mexican food, not Tex-Mex, and it was great!

Back at camp, we started a campfire early. Is it ok to eat s’mores when it’s still light out?? I think so!! So that’s exactly what we did, paired with beer and cocktails of course. We got to use one of our 2 s’mores kits we got as gifts at the camping wedding shower.
That night was pulled pork in the crockpot and 2 movies – Black K Klansman and Oceans 8 – Neither were good, but who cares – no kids!!! Tried a new game called Bananagrams and played some 9 Square. This trip was cold one, so we got to try out the propane heater for the first time and cranked up the electric fireplace too. Everything was nice and toasty!
Woke up early the next morning (much to Kevin’s chagrin) and whipped up some waffles and bacon. When I’m camping, I like to get up and get started early. I don’t want the day to get away. Usually Chewy is the culprit, but I realized this trip with out him, that it’s actually me who can’t sleep in. We fired up the Keurig and drank our coffee, soaking up the chilly morning air – love it!!
While chopping some firewood, Kevin got a little over-zealous with a swing and hit the strand of lights, tearing the cord in two and sending the light bulbs flying in 50 directions. I thought for sure those were goners (even had Amazon prime pulled up ready to order new ones) but somehow, with his mad handy man skills, he spliced the wires back together Macgyver style. We found all of the globes to the bulbs (it was like an adult scavenger hunt) and put them back up – good as new! He never ceases to amaze me. We started another campfire to cook steaks and potatoes over the fire and enjoyed our night time set up. So relaxing!
What a great weekend loaded with relaxing, talking, laughing, enjoying the outdoors and just spending time some good quality time together. We’ll consider this trip our “pre honeymoon” leading up to the real one – a cruise we just booked for April to Mexico and Belize (just the two of us again). Stay tuned . . .

I was a lay pastor in Mineral Wells back in the 90s and early 2000s. This brings back some very pleasant memories. I am glad you had a good time, but the spill way freaks me out a little too much!
